A chemical peel is a beauty procedure whereby chemical solutions containing acids (e.g., salicylic acids, glycolic acids) are applied to the skin, gently stripping away its outermost layers to restore radiance to your face. Chemical peels target a wide range of skin conditions including scars, wrinkles and ageing skin. They can be administered at home or in a clinical setting.

The widely recognised for its effectiveness in evening out skin tone and reducing hyperpigmentation, glycolic acid peels can help even out skin tone, reduce hyperpigmentation, add glow and lustre to the skin and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
Salicylic acid peels are good for gentle skin exfoliation. By penetrating the epidermis (the top layer of the skin), they effectively unclog pores, improve skin tone and texture, and decrease the appearance of melasma.
Named after its creator dermatologist Max Jessner, Jessner’s solution is a superficial peel that combines salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol with an ethanol base. Its benefits are multifold: it helps to effectively dislodge blackheads, lighten pigmentation, remove the superficial layers of skin, reduce shallow wrinkles and scars, dry out active acne and overall revitalise skin with acne, skin damaged by the sun and ageing skin. Jessner’s solution is often combined with more intense ingredients to produce a medium peel.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are considered medium-depth as they tackle primarily the top layer of the skin (epidermis), with TCA peels of higher concentrations reaching the underlying layer (dermis). If your goal is even skin tone, fewer wrinkles and fewer blemishes, TCA peels may be for you.
Blue peels obtain their name from their colour. Like trichloroacetic acid peels, blue peels comprise TCA in their formulation. Unlike TCA peels, doctors can control the depth of blue peels and the number of coats applied.

Setting up the appointment for the peel:

An outpatient procedure, a chemical peel at Dr HAACH can take 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the type of peel performed. To avoid irritation and damage caused by dust and chemicals, do not wear contact lenses during the peel.
Here’s what you can expect during the treatment:
To prevent inflammation right after a chemical peel, stay away from alcohol, cigarettes and makeup for at least 24 hours. For at least a week after, avoid hot showers and other direct sources of heat (e.g., hot tubs, saunas). For at least 2 weeks after, avoid using exfoliants, toners and facial treatments like waxing.
Remember to keep your skin moisturised and strengthen its barrier by applying a water-based moisturiser or treatment lotion. Protect your skin with sunscreen of SPF 30+ and above, and wash your face with cool water as opposed to warm water.
Generally, results from a chemical peel can be seen as early as 7-10 days after the procedure. Since the results are cumulative, however, more than 1 session is usually required for the best possible results. Dr HAACH recommends 5-10 sessions, with one session conducted per month.

Yes, chemical peels are good for your skin. However, for the best possible results, it’s crucial to follow the aftercare tips above. Due to their strength, chemical peels should be carried out no more than once every month to prevent inflammatory responses (e.g., redness, skin damage).

No, chemical peels are usually not painful. You may however feel a tingly/prickling sensation that can be uncomfortable for some people.
Both peeling and facials come with their own set of advantages. While chemical solutions are used in chemical peels, cleansers and serums are used in a facial (assuming no additional machinery and equipment are used). Typically, facials are gentler on the skin while chemical peels are a more aggressive form of treatment. Ultimately, neither option is better than the other as it’s all subjective.
Depending on the type of peel, some results may be seen after 1 peel. Below is a guideline on the number of sessions to attend to get the best results for your skin.

After receiving a chemical peel, your skin is especially prone to irritation and inflammation and needs time to heal. As such, it’s advisable to avoid:

Yes, Singaporeans can receive chemical peel treatment at a subsidised rate at NSC (national skin centre). At the time of writing, one session of chemical peel at NSC costs $75 and above, as stated on their official website. However, waiting times are typically long as walk-ins are not accepted. If you’re getting a chemical peel for medical purposes, your insurance provider may cover part of the cost.
